What skeletons are lurking in your executive closet?

You may think your past is buried, but today, it’s easier than ever for anyone to unearth old information about you.

And that information? It’s influencing their perception of your worth.

From outdated social media posts to industry gossip, every bit of data out there is shaping how people view you—and ultimately, how much they think you deserve.

Case in point: a prospective client of mine stumbled upon some old group coaching rates on my website and used that information to justify lowering (anchoring) their financial expectation of me by ~98% of my contracted proposal.

More power to them for doing their due diligence, but now I’m spending extra time realigning expectations and anchoring the negotiation more appropriately.

The lesson?

Your past will come back to haunt you and influence your future for better or worse.

So take a moment to reflect:

What ghosts might be lurking in your closet?

And more importantly, how can you proactively shape the narrative to work in your favor?

Look more closely at: 

  • Social media, (you’re likely over sharing)
  • The perception of your industry, function, vocabulary…
  • Your reputation, network, and what people say about you 
  • The company you keep…

What did you learn, move on from, and are now ready to omit?

Consider that it’s not always in writing. Sometimes you need to manage perception by influencing your network and controlling negative messaging.

Your executive past is never truly buried. Be proactive, take control of your narrative, and don’t let old skeletons undermine your future success.
